Getting your driving licence can be expensive – but a lot of the learning happens at home, and by preparing well you can reduce the number of driving lessons and thereby your total cost. Here are concrete steps you can take at home to save money, while also increasing your chances of succeeding more quickly.

1. Learn the theory at home
Before you start a lot of driving lessons, it pays to already know the basic theory.
- Make use of practice theory tests and digital questions at home. We also have an exclusive partnership with Teorifilm: an alternative, more fun and far more effective way to learn the theory – completely free!
- Set aside regular time for revision, rather than intensive last-minute cramming.
- When you get to the driving lessons, your instructor can spend more time on understanding traffic and driving skills, rather than explaining the very basics. This means the lessons become more effective – and fewer lessons mean a lower total price. You could also consider our online theory course to get off to a good start.
2. Practise at home with an accompanying driver – but structure the practice
Practising at home gives you valuable hours behind the wheel. For this practice to actually help reduce the number of lessons, you should have a plan:
- Start in calm surroundings: practise gear changing, starting and stopping, using the mirrors and indicators.
- Gradually: drive a bit more in traffic, try parking and simple lane changes.
- Parents or accompanying drivers: take our free course for accompanying drivers so they know how best to support you at home. Once you've done the homework, the lessons at the driving school can become more focused – and you get "more for your money" out of each lesson.
3. Reflect and set goals after each session
At home and after driving lessons, it's smart to write down: What worked? What do I need to practise more?
- Note down specific skills that need improvement.
- When practising at home: think through situations you weren't entirely confident in.
- When you show up for your next lesson, you can point to one or two focus points – making the learning time more effective. This means faster progress and fewer lessons overall.
4. Have a plan for your training
Having an overview gives you control over both cost and progress.
- Combine the homework with training at Feste Trafikkskole – we offer the basic traffic course as a first step, among other things. This is also compulsory if you're under 25.
- By being well prepared and making good progress, you reduce the risk of extra lessons and therefore extra cost.
Summary
By using your time at home strategically – with theory work, practice driving and planning – you can cut down the number of driving lessons and get your licence at a lower cost. Combine this with professional training at Feste Trafikkskole, and you'll have an effective and safe path to your driving licence.
