If you want to extend your licence from category B to BE or B96, you must complete a compulsory load securing course. It's a practical 2-hour course in securing and marking loads on a trailer – knowledge that makes you safer every time you put something on the trailer. At Feste Trafikkskole, you take the course during your training, whenever it suits you.
Why load securing matters
Poorly secured loads are one of the most underestimated dangers on the road. An object that shifts can change the entire handling of the vehicle combination – and in the worst case have serious consequences for both you and others. On this course, you get to feel the forces that actually act on a load while driving, and learn the methods that keep it safely in place.
Is anyone exempt from the course?
Yes. If you've previously completed a load securing course (cf. § 27-1 or § 27-2), you're exempt. The same applies if you hold or have held a driving entitlement in category C1 or C as a separate category when you obtain entitlement in BE, among others. If you're unsure whether you're exempt, we're happy to help you check.
Course content
The course is 2 teaching hours, of which at least 1 hour is practical practice in marking and securing loads on a trailer. Up to 4 students practise together placing, securing and marking loads.
What you'll learn:
You should understand why loads must be secured and marked, and know the regulations for load securing and for the transport of dangerous goods when the driver doesn't have their own certificate of competence. Through demonstration, you experience the forces acting on a load, the importance of friction, and various securing methods such as locking, blocking, lashing and covering. You also learn to assess particular hazards – such as poorly placed loads, a high centre of gravity, hanging or liquid loads, live animals and passenger transport – and to assess whether the securing equipment is in sound condition.
You'll get practical practice in:
- placing, securing and marking long loads (equivalent to a log)
- placing and securing one item with minimum dimensions of 1 × 1 × 1 m (or 0.8 × 1.2 × 1 m)
- placing and securing other loads, such as a round bale or bulk bag of at least 350 kg
The load securing course is one of the parts on the road to your trailer licence. Read more about the whole process on our page about BE and B96 (the trailer licence).

Feel free to bring valid ID, and arrive in good time – if you arrive too late, we can't approve the session under the rules from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
