Bil på vei i mørket

Night-driving (trafikant i mørket)

Planning to practise driving or take your test during the winter half of the year? Then you need the "trafikant i mørket" (night-driving) course. Through demonstrations both outdoors and in the car, you'll experience how darkness affects visibility, speed and distance judgement – and how to drive safely when the light disappears. At Feste Trafikkskole in Knarvik and Åsane, we get you ready for the dark months on the road.

Confident in the dark with Feste

Darkness hides more than you'd think. On this course, you'll see with your own eyes how late you actually spot a pedestrian, how far your headlights reach, and how big a difference reflectors make. The goal is for you to understand the risks of driving in the dark – and to know how to meet them with the right use of lights and driving behaviour.

Course content

Aim of the course

The course makes you aware of how traffic accidents in the dark can be avoided. You should be able to assess the risk of driving in the dark, and discuss how you as a road user can act to reduce it.

What you'll learn:

Through demonstrations outdoors and in the car, you experience the causes of typical accidents that happen in the dark. You learn the correct use of lights and behaviour when driving, parking and making an emergency stop, and why reflectors are vital. The course is built on practical experience rather than pure theory, so the insight sticks when you head out into the dark yourself.

The course is 3.5 hours and is run with demonstrations both outdoors and in the car.

Practical information

Good to know before the course starts

Part of the course takes place outdoors, so remember warm clothes and good footwear – whatever the weather. Feel free to bring valid ID, and arrive in good time. If you arrive too late, we can't approve the session under the rules from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, and it will then have to be made up later.

Once the course is completed and registered, you'll find your course certificate digitally on Din side at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

Frequently asked questions about night-driving

When do I have to take the night-driving course?

Everyone who is going to practise driving or take their test between 1 November and 15 March must have completed the course. Without it, you can't practise driving during this period.

How long does the course last?

Is night-driving included in the basic traffic course?

Yes. If you're over 25, you skip parts of the basic traffic course, but you still have to complete night-driving and first aid before the practical driving test.
