Basic MC course – your first step on two wheels

Dreaming of the freedom of two wheels? Before you can take lessons in category A, A2 or A1, you must complete the compulsory basic course for motorcycles. Here you take the first step into a wonderful world on the open road – with a focus on safety, mastery and the joy of riding from day one.

A real passion for two wheels

Our own MC department, Positiv & Feste Trafikkskole, is based centrally in Knarvik and at Wergeland in Bergen. Long experience, an uncompromising focus on safety and a lifelong passion for motorcycling have made us the first choice for many who want to fulfil the dream of an MC licence. We're with you all the way – from the compulsory basic course to the moment you're holding your licence.

Course content

Aim of the course

The basic motorcycle course gives you an insight into what it actually means to ride an MC, and an overview of the training you'll go through before the driving test. The course emphasises risk awareness and conscious choices in traffic.

Through conversations and discussions, you get to know the characteristics of the motorcycling community and MC culture, and you get to discuss and consider the risks of riding a motorcycle. The most important thing, though, is that you've taken the first step into life on two wheels. The course is 135 minutes (3 teaching hours) and is compulsory.

What you'll learn on the course

The basic course is the start of the four-step MC training. We go through what you need to start safely:

  • The motorcycle and you: What it means to be a motorcyclist, and how to prepare yourself mentally and practically for riding.
  • Community and culture: The characteristics of the motorcycling community and MC culture – and how to become part of it in a good way.
  • Risk and consequence: We discuss the risks of MC riding and how your own choices, speed and attention affect safety.
  • Protective gear: Why the right clothing and equipment is vital on two wheels.
  • The road ahead: An overview of the training process up to the driving test, so you know what to expect.

Practical information

Good to know before the course starts

  • Basic traffic course first: If you're under 25 and don't already have a driving licence, you must have completed the basic traffic course before signing up for the basic MC course.
  • ID: Bring valid ID to the course.
  • Attendance: Arrive in good time. If you arrive too late, we unfortunately can't approve the session under the rules from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
  • Certificate: Once the course is completed and registered, your course certificate is available digitally on Din side at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
  • Questions? Feel free to call us on 55 18 18 29 before you sign up.

Good collaboration between the driving school and the student is important for effective training. If you have questions about which path suits you – A1, A2 or A – we're happy to help you make a good plan up to the driving test.

Extension courses

If you already have an MC licence, you can upgrade without a new driving test:

  • From light (A1) to medium (A2): Possible through an extension course once you're 18 and have held the A1 licence for 2 years. You must complete a step assessment, a safety course on the track and a safety course on the road.
  • From medium (A2) to heavy (A): A 7-hour extension course once you're 20 and have held the A2 licence for 2 years.

Contact us for pricing and start dates for extension courses.

Frequently asked questions about the MC course

Do I have to take the basic traffic course before the MC course?

Yes, if you're under 25 and don't already have a driving licence. If you already have a licence in another category (for example a car), you usually don't need to take the basic traffic course again.

What's the difference between A1, A2 and A?

A1 is a light motorcycle, A2 is medium and A is a heavy motorcycle. The age limits and requirements differ – get in touch, and we'll find the right category for you.

How long does the basic course last?

The basic course is 135 minutes (3 teaching hours) and is compulsory for everyone getting an MC licence.

Can I upgrade from one MC category to another without a new driving test?

Yes. With an extension course, you can go from A1 to A2, or from A2 to A, when you meet the age and experience requirements. See the section on extension courses.

Do I need my own protective gear for the basic course?

The basic course is mainly theory and demonstration. Get in touch with us beforehand, and we'll clarify what you need for the practical parts of the training.

What happens if I miss a session?

The sessions are compulsory, so missed sessions must be made up on a later course before we can issue a certificate.
