Towing a caravan, a horse trailer or a trailer full of equipment? With the right training, driving with a trailer becomes safe and easy. Our experienced instructors take you through everything from hitching up and reversing to safe driving on the open road – tailored to your level and what you'll actually use the trailer for. We know the roads in Nordhordland and northern Bergen inside out.
Your local driving school for trailers
At Feste Trafikkskole, you'll feel safe with the trailer hitched up. We tailor every lesson to what you'll be towing and where you'll be driving, whether we meet at our office in Knarvik or at a hub in Åsane. Our goal is the same whatever the category: that you become a safe and independent driver – even with a load behind you.
B96 or BE – what's the difference?
In short: what you can drive with each category
Both categories are about driving a car with a trailer. The difference lies in how heavy a combination you're allowed to drive, and whether you have to take a new driving test.
Code 96 (B96) lets you drive a car and trailer with a combined permitted total weight of up to 4,250 kg. You gain this entitlement by taking at least 7 hours of compulsory training – without a new driving test. A fast and affordable route to the goal for most people.
Category BE lets you drive a car and trailer with a combined permitted total weight of up to 7,000 kg. The training is largely the same as B96, but ends with a driving test at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. You've already covered the first step of the training through your category B licence.
Tip: Not sure what your car can tow? Check your combination with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's trailer calculator, and remember to apply for a licence in the category you want at vegvesen.no before you start.
Step by step: the road to your trailer licence
Step 1: The foundation from category B
This step is already covered through your category B licence. So you start the training at step 2.
Step 2: Basic vehicle handling
Here you learn to master a car with a trailer technically: hitching and unhitching the trailer, reversing under control, and doing a proper safety check. How many lessons you need is adapted to your level and how much you practise privately.
Conclusion: A compulsory step-assessment lesson, where you and your instructor decide together whether you're ready for step 3.
Step 3: Driving in traffic
Now you'll drive safely and independently with a trailer in varied traffic. You learn to drive clearly, efficiently and economically, and to assess turning spots, turning methods and the use of a helper.
Conclusion: Another step-assessment lesson before you move on to the final training.
Step 4: Final training
Here you fine-tune your skills so you drive responsibly and interact well with others. You learn to choose low-risk driving styles and to prevent accidents.
Compulsory: A course in securing and marking loads (2 hours) and an on-road safety course (3 hours), where you develop your driving skills and reflect on your own driving with a trailer.
Practical test (applies to category BE)
You take the practical test at a traffic station, and you authorise the driving school to book the appointment. When you arrive, you must show valid ID, and it's cheaper to pay for the test online in advance via Din side (My Page) at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
You drive for around 40 minutes in varied traffic on a set route. The test begins with you hitching up the trailer and doing a safety check, and ends with you unhitching it again. Along the way you'll be asked to drive to named places, and to turn, park and reverse. The examiner assesses the overall picture: good vehicle handling, safe turning and reversing, attention to traffic and a driving style that is clear, safe and anticipatory.
Vehicle requirements for the test: The car must have a maximum permitted total weight of 3,500 kg, at least four seats and be approved by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The trailer must be at least as tall and wide as the car, have a permitted total weight of at least 1,500 kg and be loaded with at least 300 kg distributed across several items. Together, the permitted weight must exceed 3,500 kg. The vehicle must be specially approved for the test, so you rent this from us.

Frequently asked questions about categories BE and B96
What's the difference between B96 and BE?
B96 lets you drive a car and trailer with a combined total weight of up to 4,250 kg and requires no new driving test. BE lets you drive up to 7,000 kg combined, but ends with a driving test at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The training is otherwise quite similar.
Do I have to take a new theory test for BE or B96?
No. Neither B96 nor BE has its own theory test. B96 ends without a driving test, while BE ends with a practical driving test.
How many lessons do I have to take?
For B96, the minimum is 7 hours of compulsory training. For BE, the number is adapted to your level and how much you practise privately, in addition to the compulsory courses (load securing and the on-road safety course).
Where does the training take place?
We're based in Knarvik (Kvernhushaugane 4, Isdalstø) and also drive a lot in the Åsane area. We're happy to arrange to meet at central hubs in Knarvik and Åsane.
How long does it take?
It varies with how much you practise, but many people finish within a few weeks. After an assessment lesson, we'll give you a realistic plan tailored to your everyday life in Knarvik and Åsane.
